How to Crochet a Granny Square!

Granny Square

This year I am teaming up with Simply Crochet Mag for Granny Square Day! If you haven't heard of Granny Square Day, its a day where we can all come together on Instagram and share our squares with the world to create an online virtual blanket! It's so easy to get involved, all you need to do is crop your square so it fits the entire screen and use the hashtag #grannysquareday2024 so that it appears as part of the virtual blanket! You can also tag @simplycrochetmag on Instagram so they can see what you have been creating!

If you would like to read more about it, there is more detailed information through the link below https://www.gathered.how/knitting-and-crochet/crochet/granny-square-day

I will be sharing more free granny square patterns on my blog during Granny Square Day on 15th August!!!

So, with Granny Square Day around the corner I thought I would go back to basics and share how to crochet a regular granny square!

This pattern is written in US terms. I have used a 5mm hook with dk yarn but you can use any yarn and hook that you wish!

Notes

·         Ch3 counts as a st

·         Ch1 does not count as a st

·         Turn your work after every round to avoid a wonky granny square - This is an extremely useful tip, a wonky granny square can be so heartbreaking!!!!

·         You can decide which side is the WS and which side is the RS

Pattern

If you are changing colour on a round, turn your work and attach your new yarn in any corner chsp, skip the instructions for slst into chsp and go straight from the ch3.

Ch4, slst into 1st ch to create a loop or if you prefer you can use the magic ring. – If using the ch method be sure to crochet Round 1 around the centre tail so that you can pull the tail to close the centre loop after completing Round 1.

Round 1

Ch3, 2dc in the loop, ch2, *3dc in the loop, ch2* - rpt this 2 more times so that you end up with 4 sets of 3dc, slst to top of ch3 to join. (4 sets of 3dc + 4 corner chsps).

Pull the loose tail from the beginning to tighten the centre ring.
